Tasmania is a living ark of rare and amazing native animals, many found nowhere else. Located south of mainland Australia, Tasmania has a colorful past. First settled as a penal colony in 1803, the legacy of convict and free-settler heritage is evident in Georgian and Victorian buildings. The go-ahead capital of Western Australia is set on the banks of the sparking Swan River, a few miles from the magnificent beaches of the Indian Ocean. A short way downstream is the vibrant, historic port city of Fremantle, host to the 1994 America's Cup sailing challenge. As the only major city on the west coast, Perth is probably more well known as the fly-in point for attractions beyond the city:
A modern gateway to Australia's "Top End", Darwin enjoys a relaxed tropical lifestyle with a huge choice of activities for the visitor. The city's colorful markets are world-renowned, and restaurants range from fine dining to the more casual fish and chips on the wharf. An ideal base for visits to such spectacular World Heritage areas as Kakadu National Park. Must Do's:
