A glimpse of this powerful landscape will stay in your memory and your dreams. ![]() Australia's most recognizable landmark, the great red mound of Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock) is the world's largest monolith and is one of the most spectacular sites on the planet. Now back in the hands of Australia's indigenous inhabitants, the rock is no longer open to climbers. It is, however, still possible to visit and view this incredible phenomenon. Often associated with Uluru, despite being over 400 km (250 miles) away is the Northern Territory's second largest city, Alice Springs. The former mining town of 20,000 people is a convenient base for exploring the area known as the Red Centre of Australia. |
