Australia Dreaming: The Southeast

A high percentage of Australia's population lives close to the coast of southeastern Australia. Here are Australia's most vibrant cities, with magnificent beaches and easy access to mountains, forests, wine country and wildlife viewing opportunities.

Sydney
Sydney is one of the most beautiful cosmopolitan cities in the world with its amazing harbour.

Must Do's:
  • Experience Sydney by ferry, charter cruise, and yacht or water taxi.
  • View the world from the top of the harbour bridge.
  • Visit Sydney Opera House
  • Explore The Rocks, the site of Australia's first European settlement
  • Surf at Bondi Beach or Manly Beach
  • Shop or play at Darling Harbour
Beyond Sydney:
Just two hours drive north of Sydney is the Hunter Region, where you will find sparking waterways, rugged mountains, forests and fascinating towns reflecting the colonial heritage.

The Hunter Wine Country is Australia's oldest wine producing area. Here are some of Australia's most famous wineries, sprinkled throughout the back roads of the beautiful hills near Cessnock (92 miles north). You can take a horse-drawn carriage, soar in a hot air balloon or leisurely cycle through beautiful and peaceful countryside.

Melbourne
Known as 'The Events Capital", this magical metropolis revels in its easy ways. Enjoy glorious architecture, superb hotels, fabulous theaters, art galleries, famous zoo, curious trams, wonderful shopping, rambling parks and leafy gardens, incredible sports and an array of fine restaurants that make eating out a great experience.

Must Do's:
  • Rialto Towers Observation Deck
  • Fitzroy Gardens
  • Melbourne Zoo
  • Royal Botanic Gardens
  • Queen Victoria Market
  • Colonial Tramcar Restaurant
Sport:
Melbourne is a sports-mad city and home to world famous events such as the Melbourne Cup horse race, the Australian Open Tennis, the Australian Formula One Grand prix and the Bells Beach Surf Classic. Take a tour of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, featuring the Australian Gallery of Sport, and venue of Australian Rules Football Grand Final, which draws huge crowds every year. Play tennis at Melbourne Park or a round of golf at one of the many world-class courses around the city.
Beyond Melbourne:
  • The Dandenongs One hour's drive east of the city is a "ranges" area, famous for lovely forest scenery, Devonshire teas and a host of galleries and craft shops. The Dandenongs are also home to many lovely gardens, Puffing Billy Steam railway and the Dandenongs National Park.
  • Yarra Valley One of Australia's premium winegrowing areas, where some 30 wineries offer cellar-door sales. Here too you will find the Healsville Sanctuary, home to native animals in natural bush surrounds. Adventure activities can be enjoyed in the Yarra Ranges National Park.
  • The Great Ocean Road Southwest of Melbourne, 62 miles/100kilometres, is one of the most spectacular coastal drives in the world, featuring stunning rock formations. Along the way, stop and see the National Wool Museum at Geelong, the rainforests of the Otaway Ranges, pretty coastal villages such as Lorne and Port Fairy, and learn about the shipwrecks that that dot this rugged coast at the Flagstaff Hill maritime Museum, Warrnambool
  • Ballarat Situated on the Goldfields Tourist route, this historic town and in particular the gold mining township of Sovereign Hill, give you a glimpse into times past.
  • Philip Island To the Southeast of Melbourne is the holiday island, Phillip Island, famous for its nightly parade of fairy penguins as each evening at dusk, these little birds marching up the beach to their sand-dune burrows. But it is also home to koalas, which can be viewed from treetop boardwalks at the Koala Conservation Centre, and seals, seen in their natural habitat at the Seal Rocks Sea Life Centre.
  • The Grampians - Hanging Rock

Adelaide
Capital of South Australia, this city is gracious, spacious and green - its central square mile ringed by protective parklands. Unlike the rest of Australia, south Australia was not established by convicts. Adelaide is home to a strong cafe society, art galleries, performing arts and historically significant architecture.

Must Do's:
  • Parliament House & Government House
  • Tandanya Museum
  • Art Gallery
  • Botanical Gardens
  • Adelaide Festival Centre
  • Central Market

From Adelaide you can visit:
The Wine Country of the Barossa Valley & Clare Valley Kangaroo Island, to see wildlife in its natural environment.
Then further afield to:
  • Flinders Ranges
  • The Outback
  • Coober Pedy opal mining community

Brisbane
Enjoy the vitality of a modern, growing city along with the atmosphere of a friendly country town: that's Brisbane, capital of Queensland, Australia's second larges state. The city sits on the banks of the meandering Brisbane River, close to the waters of Moreton Bay. The ideal jumping off spot into the outback and rainforests of the hinterland or to the famous beaches of the Gold and Sunshine Coasts.
Must Do's:
  • South Bank Parklands & Markets
  • Queensland Cultural Centre
  • Australia Zoo - Home of TV's Crocodile Hunter
