NZ Dreaming: Nature and the Environment

Separated from the landmass of Gondwanaland 60 to 80 million years ago, much of the flora and fauna of New Zealand is found nowhere else in the world. We offer many opportunities to experience this amazingly different environment.

Natural Encouters and Ecotours
Most countries can offer the birdlife, some can offer wildlife. But unlike most countries, New Zealand has it all; tours of the sea, with beautiful beaches and shoreline, of lakes and rivers, of untouched native forests, mountains and volcanoes, of alpine regions and stunning glaciers. Tours of a clean and green land, on foot, in 4x4 vehicles, in boats, aeroplanes and helicopters - it seems the sky is the limit!

Wilderness Hikes
HOLLYFORD TRACK
The dramatic Hollyford Valley is New Zealand's wilderness at its most undisturbed and inspiring. Unlike any other walk, the scenery is geologically spectacular and ever changing - snow capped mountains, glaciers, rainforests, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, reefs, sand dunes and surf. The diversity of landforms, vegetation and wildlife within this one valley is unequalled. The experiences you share with your small group (a maximum of 16 people) are just as diverse - hiking through World Heritage wilderness, a captivating jet boat down the river and across Lake McKerrow, exploring historical sights, and a scenic helicopter flight followed by a cruise on Milford Sound.

MILFORD TRACK
Traversing the heart of New Zealand's wild fiord country, the Milford Track has long been described as "the finest walk in the world". Since Quintin Mackinnon pioneered the route in 1888, everyone from hardened trekkers to novices sporting their first pair of boots has taken up the challenge of the Milford Track.

The Fiordland National Park is the cornerstone of the Te Wahipounamu Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area. Enjoy close encounters with the native bird life: the Robin; Kea; Weka; Fantail; Parakeet; Bellbird; even Kiwi have been spotted! Walkers on the track to Milford Sound encounter Fiordland at its most spectacular: deep lakes; silent fiords; luxuriant forest and sheer canyons carved out of imposing granite define this landscape. On fine days there is a postcard shot around every corner, but only when it rains and torrents of water cascade down the mountainsides have you truly experienced the magic of the Milford Track.

ROUTEBURN
The Routeburn Track traverses wild and scenic mountain country between the Hollyford and Dart Valleys at the base of New Zealand's Southern Alps. Since the 1880's the Routeburn Track has proved to be one of the most accessible and popular journeys into New Zealand's forests and mountains.
The Routeburn Track passes through two national parks, Fiordland and Mount Aspiring, and is part of Te Wahipounamu, South West New Zealand World Heritage Area. The area is a haven for native bird life: the Robin; Fantail; Parakeet; Bellbird; Yellowhead and watch out for the resident Kea at Routeburn Falls! The variety of landscapes will astound you: mountainous peaks; sheer rock faces; alpine basins; pristine lakes; cascading waterfalls; luxuriant forest; turquoise rivers and million dollar views around every corner.

Bird Watching
Would you like to visit a penguin colony or watch the mighty albatross? Maybe visit a kiwi and other unique New Zealand birds.

Whale Watching
In the South Island of New Zealand lies Kaikoura, an area steeped in Maori history and legend. Off the coast of the village is a marine environment so rich in nutrients that it attracts some of the most magnificent creatures with which we share our planet. Among them the giant Sperm Whale which can grow up to 20 metres in length and has the largest brain of any animal alive. Let us take you on the most breathtaking adventure of a lifetime. Let us take you right into the world of the whales to meet them face to face.

Not only can we introduce you to the magnificent Sperm Whale, but also to migratory Humpback Whales (June & July), Orca (summer months), New Zealand's own tiny Hectors dolphin, the high spirited displays of the Dusky dolphins, New Zealand Fur seals and the Royal Albatross.
