New Zealand Dreaming: Breathtaking Scenery

From semi-tropical beaches to ice-capped mountain peaks, New Zealand has an amazing variety of landscapes.

Landscape of 'Lord of the Rings'
The incredibly beautiful scenery of Middle Earth can be found within New Zealand. The majority of the award winning film trilogy was filmed here. Tour the shooting locations for 'The Lord of the Rings' and experience Middle Earth for yourself.

Mountains and Fiords
FIORDLAND NATIONAL PARK
Fiordland National Park is New Zealand's largest at over 1.2 million hectares making it also one of the largest in the world. As its name suggests, fiords dominate the coastline, some stretching as far as 40 km inland. These fiords and valleys were carved by glaciers over 2 million years ago. The park is home to New Zealand's deepest lake, highest waterfall and also has the highest rainfall (7600mm per year in parts) in NZ.

With a large diversity of habitats in Fiordland National Park you will find a large variety of fauna and flora, over 700 plants are found only in Fiordland and it is home to some of the New Zealands most unique birds.

AORAKI (MT. COOK)
The tallest mountain in New Zealand at 3755m (12800 feet), Aoraki is surrounded by other spectacular peaks of the Southern Alps, most of which are snow-covered all year round.

Glow Worm Caves
New Zealand has several spectacular glow worm caves in both the North and South Islands.
At Waitomo Caves in the Waikato area of the North Island a guided tour of the limestone cave and a boat ride through the darkness of the Glowworm Grotto is a trip not to be missed. The glow of numerous insects reflects off the water deep underground.

Geothermal Wonders
Rotorua is the centre of New Zealand's geothermal area. There are splendid volcanic and geothermal attractions for relaxation and fun.

Pristine Shorelines
New Zealand has miles and miles of pristine beaches, on both coasts of both islands. Amongst our many favorites is 90 Mile Beach. Here you can take a bus trip on the sand where the tide has been just a few hours before.

The Coromandel Penisula hs many fine sandy coves, some with scuplted sandstone rocks.

The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki offer one of New Zealand's most spectacular natural landscapes. This unique natural attraction is formed from layer upon layer of water sculpted limestone, resembling stacks of pancakes.

Native Rain Forests
New Zealand is home to a large variety of beautiful flora of which 84% exists only in New Zealand. The forests range from subtropical to temperate, evergreen rainforest and beech forests. Native trees include Rimu, Totara, Matai, Kahikatea and many species of ferns including some giant tree ferns. More notable trees include, the Cabbage Tree, the Nikau Palm which is New Zealand's only palm tree, and the Giant Kauri. Some of the older Kauri trees rate as the largest trees on earth.

Rail Journeys
As well as the rail network covering major destinations in the North and South Islands, several small tourist-oriented rail services take visitors on trips through spectacular scenery.
